Embarking on your electric bike world tour may be daunting. With so many types of motors, batteries, and technologies, we will be the first to acknowledge that this may be confusing. Fortunately, with fifty years of development experience, we have a deep understanding of the operation of electric assisted bicycles. Here, we will answer all your questions, such as what an electric assisted bicycle is and the working principle of an electric assisted bicycle. We will also teach you about the technologies used in electric assisted bicycles and what you need to know, so that you can use your knowledge to ride and find a suitable electric assisted bicycle for yourself.
Just like traditional bicycles, electric assisted bicycles start from the basic bicycle frame, which has similar characteristics and functions to its unpowered version. The design of electric assisted bicycle frames is usually slightly different from non electric assisted frames to optimize battery and motor layout.
The motor of an electric bicycle is equipped with moving parts, which can provide assistance when you step on the pedal. Just like car engines, some electric bike motors can be stronger, lighter, or more efficient than other motors. Although many brands offer power assisted bicycle motors, most electric assisted bicycles only have two popular types of motors, namely central drive or hub drive.
The central transmission motor is located in the middle of the bicycle, which is the center position where you step on the pedal. They offer various power capacities and provide a stable center of gravity and smooth support, making it feel more natural when stepping on the pedal.
The hub drive motor is encapsulated in the hub of the rear wheel, close to the rear gear of the bicycle. They are usually more affordable and lightweight than mid mounted drive motors, making it easier to find the motor that suits your budget, so all you need to do is jump onto the car and start.
1. Torque
Torque is the steering force that causes the electric bicycle motor to rotate and propel you forward. Bicycles with higher torque provide greater immediate explosive power, while bicycles with lower torque provide less immediate explosive power. The maximum torque that an electric bicycle motor can generate is measured in Newton meters (Nm).
People may think that larger is better, but there may be slight differences in torque. High torque electric assisted bicycles are very suitable for steep slopes and fast acceleration, but may not be as natural and stable as low torque electric assisted bicycles. Before choosing a bicycle with the maximum motor and torque, it's best to consider how you want to use your electric bike and how smooth or powerful you want it to be. Although there is no definite definition, generally speaking, bicycles below 50Nm can be considered low torque, and bicycles above 65Nm can be considered high torque.
2. Power
Power is the force that keeps your electric bike motor running and running. In scientific terms, it is the electromotive force that drives an electric assisted bicycle forward. Electric power is measured in watts (or W for short), which is a single unit of electrical energy. According to the law, the maximum power limit of an electric bicycle motor is 250W in order to be classified as a bicycle.
3. Battery capacity
The capacity of a battery or the amount of electricity it can hold is calculated through mathematical calculations using several different measurement units. When we multiply the ampere hour (the unit of measurement for capacitance) by the volt (the force that propels the ampere through the system), we obtain the watt hour (Wh for short). Watt hours represent the maximum capacity of a battery, which is related to the amount of time the battery can run before running out of charge.
The larger the battery capacity used in electric bicycles, the farther and longer you can ride, but high-capacity electric bicycle batteries are also larger and heavier than low capacity batteries.
4. Charging cycle
Just like any other type of battery, electric assisted bicycle batteries can be fully charged and discharged a limited number of times before they need to be replaced. The lifespan of electric assisted bicycle batteries is expressed by the charging cycle, which refers to the discharge and charging of the battery. The rated charging cycle of most electric assisted bicycle batteries is 800-1000 times, which is equivalent to supporting a cycling range of over 10000 miles.
To extend the lifespan of the battery, please store it in a cool and dry place when not in use, and perform routine maintenance at any time. When your battery life expires, we will help you recycle the battery.
5. Mileage
The range refers to the distance that the electric assisted bicycle system can provide assistance before the battery runs out. There are many factors that affect the total range of electric assisted bicycles, such as the road surface, terrain, wind, riding behavior, rider weight, and even tire pressure. Some electric assisted bicycle systems equipped with intelligent technology can provide real-time estimated mileage data, helping you understand how much battery you have for assisted riding before needing to charge. Many can also be paired with assisted range extender batteries to help you go further.
